by Shannon Revelle, Commander, Navy Installations Command Commercial Sponsorship Program Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) recently finished five of 12 worldwide live esports tournaments with more than 125 Sailors and MWR patrons from around the world battling it out on PlayStation 4 to determine the best in Madden NFL 20.
For those who missed recent tournaments, do not fret. Navy MWR has a few more esports competitions scheduled this month.
“It is important for us to find a way to maintain relevant programming for Sailors,” said Refugio Orozco, branch head of Commander, Navy Installations Command’s Fleet and Family Readiness marketing and communications. “Navy MWR Esports tournaments do just that by providing entertainment and recreation opportunities to Sailors around the world through competitive sports using video games.”
Last month’s tournament, shown on the newly established Navy MWR Twitch channel at www.twitch.tv/NavyMWR, included main host talent Jeff Eisenbrand, an avid esports enthusiast with host experience at MSG Networks and NBA 2K League. Over 158,000 excited fans tuned in for the first tournament series. Total minutes watched peaked at 1,107,988.
The Navy Exchange (NEX) provided gift cards as prizes for each tournament including a $200 NEX gift card for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. Culinary Specialist (CSSN) Hunter Sims, gaming name “SIMSH6”, from the USS George Washington (CVN 73) took home the first-place prize during tournament four.
“I have six years of experience and I heard about this opportunity from a friend,” said Sims. “My friends think I am good so I played and I won! I am always up for a competition. I plan on playing again and I definitely would recommend Navy MWR Esports to other gamers.”

Get Ready for the Next Tournament
The next multidimensional initiative will start on June 18 on the Navy MWR Twitch channel. The tournament will cross platforms and can be played on Xbox, PlayStation or PC.
“Facilitating state-of-the art esports tournaments provides a platform to drive the Navy MWR Esports message home,” Orozco said. “We received a great deal of feedback from Sailors, and we are happy to announce the new title moving forward will be Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.”

The following is the upcoming tournament’s schedule:
June 18, 6 p.m. EST
June 19, 6 p.m. PST
June 25, 7 p.m. CST
July 2, 6 p.m. EST
